These are photos from a weeklong solo road trip in July 2023. From Phoenix east and then up to Denver.
How satisfying it is to crave something for your body, know exactly where to find it, and act. In this case, for months I'd been craving what painter Clyfford Still would call an "awful bigness."
Big nothing. No people. Few colors. Less noise visually, and sonically. Grateful to have memories out west here from my childhood and know exactly where to go for these kinds of feelings.
Tube Project
There are a lot of things to be adored about Mexico. When I started living part-time there in 2021, one of the things I'd notice on my strolls or errand runs were these stout tubes peeking out of the ground or walls. Unspectacular yet somehow felt special. Friendly? They always looked well-behaved at least. And I appreciated the pop of color and texture they added to whatever corner they sprouted from. I began to look for them anywhere I went.
This first one, the yellow tube with the red cap, is one I actually shot in Paris. We don't have many, if any, in New York. Gives me a small thing to look forward to when I travel, feeling somehow like it's a distant relative of the tubes back in Mexico City saying hello. If you see a cute tube like this on your journeys, please send me a photo. x

Maybe you can feel it from these photos, but these were moments that made life feel big. Enormous. Precious and powerful at once.
